Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure involving the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both, that rejuvenates the appearance of the eyes. It removes excess loose upper eyelid skin, reduces ‘bags’ under the eyes, remove excess wrinkles, and restores a more youthful appearance to the eyes. One of the first things noticed about a person are their eyes. During the aging process, skin laxity, wrinkles, and puffiness contribute to a tired or aged appearance. Blepharoplasty is often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a face lift or rhinoplasty (nose surgery).
Reasons for Considering Eyelid Surgery
- Excessive skin or wrinkles surrounding the eyelids.
- A tired appearance, puffiness or bags.
The surgical procedure includes incisions made in the natural contours around the eyelids which should leave minimal visible scarring. The Clinic will usually work on the upper eyelids first to remove any fatty tissue and tighten loose skin. Lower eyelids are completed next to eliminate puffiness and help reduce dark circles. Techniques may also include Botox injections to soften fine lines and wrinkles located laterally (crows feet).
The surgery generally takes about one to two hours and is performed most frequently as a general anaesthetic case. Sutures are typically removed one week after surgery. Ice packs are placed on the eyes after surgery to reduce swelling and bruising.
Normally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. Bruising around the eyes may be apparent during the first couple of weeks after surgery. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery which can be treated with oral medication. While complications are infrequent, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions given after the surgery.
A brow or forehead lift can be performed as an isolated procedure for the upper face, or as an adjunctive procedure to complement total facial rejuvenation. Horizontal lines on the forehead and vertical creases between the eyebrows (frown lines) can contribute toward a tired, sad, and angry appearance. Additionally, hooding of the brow over the eye can block off parts of the eye itself. These factors contribute toward accentuating a much older appearance than your actual age.
A forehead lift can revitalize the entire face and make your face appear years younger by tightening and elevating forehead skin, creating a more well-defined shape to the eyebrows, softening lines, and opening up the eyes.
The Clinic will most often use an endoscopic technique to leave the minimal amount of scarring possible. The end result is a more revitalized and youthful contoured brow.
